As an Operations Industrial Engineer I at DHL eCommerce, you will drive operational excellence across our supply chain network by combining data-driven analysis with Gemba observations to identify and implement scalable solutions.
**Job Summary**
As an Operations Industrial Engineer I at DHL eCommerce, you will drive operational excellence across our supply chain network by combining data-driven analysis with Gemba observations to identify and implement scalable solutions. In this role, you will develop labor models, conduct time studies, optimize sort plans and facility layouts, and leverage Python, SQL, data visualization, and mathematical optimization models to turn complex data into actionable insights.
This position emphasizes building and deploying optimization models —rather than relying on manual planning—to deliver scalable solutions that balance cost, flexibility, and efficiency. The team is positioned to optimize the supply chain network and deliver corporate-level impact. You will work closely with Operations, Transportation, Automation, and other cross-functional teams. Together, you will drive strategic improvements that enhance performance and support network growth.
**Essential Duties & Responsibilities**
* **Engineering Support:** Provides strategic engineering expertise to optimize distribution center operations and broader supply chain performance
* **Network Optimization Strategy:** Drive initiatives that position the team to optimize the supply chain network and deliver corporate-level impact through data-driven analysis, capacity planning, and scalable engineering solutions.
* **Traditional Industrial Engineering Tasks:** Engage in traditional Industrial Engineering tasks including staff planning models, productivity improvement, work methods and measurement standards, best practice identification, standardized process maintenance and procedure documentation, sort plan optimization.
* Conducts time-studies, identification and description of process deviations, identification and implementation of best practices
* **Ergonomics & Safety:** Evaluate and improve workstation and material handling ergonomics to reduce risk of injury, enhance employee safety, and support productivity through data-driven assessments and best practices.
* **Advanced Root Cause Analysis:** Conduct advanced root cause analysis on metrics to enhance cost effectiveness and operational efficiency
* **Performance Analysis:** Analyzes reports and data related to network engineering performance identifying and documenting deviations (e.g., service performance, quality, cost per unit, pieces per hour).
* Identifies and documents process/product/profile deviations per customer/process/distribution center on a regular basis
* **Data Visualization:** Develop insights through analysis and visualization with data to inform and influence stakeholders.
* **SQL Proficiency:** Uses SQL for basic data extraction and analysis to support engineering studies and reporting.
* **Layout Optimization:** Identifies opportunities for layout-optimization and implement best practices through time studies and process analysis of existing distribution centers
* **Back-Office Efficiency:** Support back-office process optimization by applying Lean principles to eliminate waste, streamline workflows, and improve back-office efficiency across the network.
* **Business Case Development:** Develop business cases and track ROI for engineering initiatives.
* **Continuous Improvement:** Utilize continuous improvement methodology; assess key performance indicators; establish project objectives; drive short- and long-term strategic plans to meet critical timelines.
* **Stakeholder Collaboration:** Actively supports internal and external stakeholder collaboration. Builds relationships with Operations, Automation, and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and buy-in for engineering initiatives.
* **Cross-Functional Evaluation:** Work with peers and stakeholders across Operations, Automation, and cross-functional teams to evaluate different business opportunities.
* **Tools Application:** Applies foundational tools including SQL, Lean (VSM, 5S), Time & Motion, and standardization.
* **Innovation:** Stay current with innovations and analytical advancements, providing thought leadership in choosing the right algorithm for solving business problems.
* **AI Initiative Support:** Contribute to AI-driven initiatives by generating ideas, assisting with vendor evaluations, supporting implementation efforts, and driving continuous improvement to ensure solutions align with operational and business objectives.
**Education And/Or Experience**
* Bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering required.
* 0-1 years relevant experience, which includes internships, project experience or practical training.
* Basic MOST certification or equivalent is preferred but not required.
* Experience in automation design and implementation preferred.
* Exposure to SQL, Python, simulation, and Lean tools; familiarity with visualization tools such as Power BI is a plus.
* Demonstrated proficiency in MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, comfort in Visio and/or AutoCAD/
* Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt or equivalent preferred but not required.

**Physical Demands**
* Physical demands are consistent with a professional office setting
* Regular sitting at workstation for 50-75% of the work shift
* Travel up to 10% or as needed.
